Album lore
Issued in November 2004 by Sire and Nick Records, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie – Music from the Movie and More... collects a disparate assembly of pop and rock tracks aligned with the animated film’s offbeat sensibility. The album offers a glimpse into the musical predilections of the SpongeBob SquarePants creative team, consciously eschewing mainstream crossover: series creator Stephen Hillenburg notably declined a collaboration with Wayne Coyne and Justin Timberlake, preferring a more idiosyncratic selection. Among its 15 tracks, the record features “Now That We’re Men,” a standout cut alongside the Flaming Lips’ “SpongeBob & Patrick Confront the Psychic Wall of Energy,” performed live on Conan O’Brien’s show with Coyne encased in a giant bubble. The soundtrack also nods to rock lineage with “Goofy Goober Rock,” a parody of Twisted Sister’s “I Wanna Rock,” and Motörhead’s “You Better Swim,” a reworking of their 1992 track “You Better Run.” This compilation remains a peculiar artifact of early 2000s pop culture, bridging animation and alternative rock with a wink and a nudge.
