Album lore
Adrianne Lenker’s 2020 album Songs was recorded in a small cabin nestled in the Berkshire Mountains of Western Massachusetts, a space Lenker likened to the inside of an acoustic guitar for its natural resonance. The sessions spanned April and May of that year, following the sudden halt of Big Thief’s tour. Accompanied by engineer and co-producer Philip Weinrobe, Lenker captured eleven tracks that blend acoustic guitar, subtle found sounds, and her intimate vocals. The recording process was marked by technical setbacks, including the loss of several tape machines, which lent the album a raw immediacy as they adapted to working primarily with a battery-powered Sony Walkman and a rescued Otari 8-track. Songs unfolds with a quiet austerity, its compositions written mostly during the recording month, reflecting Lenker’s heartsick state and daily rituals by the creek and woodstove. The album’s arrangements are sparse and unadorned, emphasizing the texture of Lenker’s guitar and voice alongside ambient sounds drawn from the forest surroundings. Mastered by Scott Hull at Masterdisk, Songs stands as a document of solitude and repair, its understated presence resonating through the folky contours of contemporary indie songwriting.
